How to Install Saddlebags on a 1996 Harley Sportster

The Harley-Davidson Sportster combines the stripped-down classic Harley look with all the technology and performance of modern motorcycles. A number of accessories are available for the Sportster line, including saddlebags, but they must be mounted with special mounting brackets. These mounting brackets adjust the configuration of the rear fender and suspension so that saddlebags can be added. With the right tools and technique, you can install saddlebags on your 1996 Harley Sportster with relative ease.

• Sporster saddlebag support kit
• Saddlebags
• Socket set
• Socket driver
• Allen wrench set

     Open the seat by swinging it on its hinges and removing the bolts holding the hinge in place with a socket driver.

     Raise the motorcycle on an automotive jack so the rear wheel is off the ground.

     Remove the lower bolt, washer and nut from the rear shock absorbers on both sides of the motorcycle with a socket driver.

     Remove the two button-head screws and the two locknuts in both sides of the rear fender with an Allen wrench.

     Remove the two under-fender clip nuts from the left and right rear fender support covers with a socket driver.

     Install the screw from the kit through the rear fender hole and screw it through the front fender hole into the fender support and cover. This is where the two button-head screws were attached.

     Install the short spacer onto the rear bolt and the long spacer onto the front bolt.

     Slide the saddlebag onto the bolts until the bushings are seated on the saddlebag bracket.

     Thread washers and flange locknuts from the kit to bolts on the inside of the saddlebag. Reattach the seat and lower the bike to the ground.
